true dip

1. n. [Geology]

The maximum angle that a bedding plane, fault plane or other geological surface declines away from a horizontal plane measured in a vertical plane that is perpendicular to the strike of the structure. Any measurement obtained at an angle not perpendicular to strike will yield an apparent dip, which is always less than the maximum angle of declination that is obtained when measuring perpendicular to formation strike.
